COUNCILS NEED MORE SUPPORT TO ENFORCE FOOD SAFETY STANDARDS – HUHNE

Commenting on the news that Birmingham City Council is prosecuting Cadbury over the Salmonella outbreak at one of its plants, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

“It’s important that public authorities responsible for food safety enforce the law, and insist on tough penalties when there are breaches of standards.

“Birmingham City Council’s move is welcome, but we should look at giving more support to local authorities to bear what can be heavy legal costs in the pursuit of the wider public interest well beyond their local area.

“Cadburys clearly has a case to answer and should be held to account.”
