Less populist puff and more police action needed to tackle alcohol abuse

4.00.00pm GMT Wed 6th Feb 2008

Commenting on Jacqui Smith's speech today focusing on the level of alcohol abuse amongst young people, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"This is all populist puffery since the police already have the power to crack down on youth alcohol, and just need to use those powers more when needed.

"The power already exists allowing police to take alcohol from kids in a public place. Ministers need urgent treatment for their long-standing addiction to legislation when what is needed is action. Law is not a substitute for enforcement.

"The Government should focus its attention on curbing the sale of alcohol to children and on providing more activities for young people. This would have a far greater impact on teenage drinkers than any headline-chasing crackdowns."
