Control Orders a Danger to Justice and Society - Huhne

9.32.38pm GMT Fri 22nd Feb 2008

Commenting on the decision to quash the control order on Cerie Bullivant, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"This case demonstrates why we voted against control orders this week. They violate the basic legal principle that we are innocent until proven guilty.

"The Home Office should bring charges and proof to trial and not severely restrict personal freedom on no more than a hunch about the people with whom someone has associated.

"Control orders are a danger both to justice and to security since they alienate precisely those communities on whom we must rely for information and cooperation in tackling terrorism. We must never become what we are fighting, because that is what the terrorists want."
