Chris Huhne, Member of Parliament for Eastleigh

Local policing must be given a real chance

5.02.23pm GMT Mon 25th Feb 2008

Commenting on the Government's new emphasis on neighbourhood policing announced today, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"The Government's belated conversion to local policing is good news, but they have to think through all the moves necessary to give it a real chance.

Police on the Beat

"Crime and conviction data must be published at ward level so that local people can knowledgeably hold their team to account and there must be more police on the beat.

"Ministers must also be in the game for the long-haul, rather than trying to grab easy headlines. This means no sudden budget cuts as happened last year on the 101 non-emergency line and Police Community Support Officers."
