Searchlight needs to be shone into control orders

8.00.00pm GMT Fri 29th Feb 2008

Commenting on the news that a High Court judge has told Jacqui Smith that she must reveal why an individual must remain subject to control order restrictions, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"This ruling demonstrates the need for a searchlight to be shone into the murky world of control orders.

"Basic legal safeguards do not exist in these cases and the judge is rightly concerned that people are having their freedom impaired without the ability to respond to the accusations against them."
