All-party committee deals further blow to 42-day detention

11.00.00am GMT Wed 14th May 2008

Commenting on the report from the Joint Committee on Human Rights, which criticises the Government's plans to increase the maximum pre-charge detention period to 42 days, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"This is another well-respected opinion joining the throng of voices warning against the Government's proposals for 42 days of detention without charge.

"The committee is right to say that minority communities could become alienated, worsening the problems of police trying to tackle terrorism."
