Government's terror policies not working

12.00.00am GMT Tue 17th Jun 2008

Responding to the news that radical Islamist preacher Abu Qatada is to be released on bail within 24 hours, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"The Government's flailing over Abu Qatada has shown that its terrorism policies are not working.

"The memorandum of understanding with Jordan has been exposed as not being worth the paper it's written on and he is being released because there is nothing to charge him with.

"Qatada must be charged in the UK courts, or released.

"It is ironic that ministers are appealing his extradition refusal to the Law Lords but are putting him on a 22 hour curfew, which the Law Lords have already said is unlawful."
