Improving detection rates is best way to tackle crime

10.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 10th Jul 2008

Commenting on figures showing a wide disparity between different police forces' detection rates on violent crime, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Affairs Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"The most effective way to tackle violent crime is by catching more criminals, so detection is the key to success, not posturing on sentences.

"The wide variation in detection rates even for serious violent offences shows that there is a lot to be done in spreading best practice across our police forces.

"If the detection rate nationally was as good as the best performing force, over 320,000 more violent crimes would be solved."
