Surge in violent crime hits poorest hardest

11.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 14th Jul 2008

Commenting on research by the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health that reveals the number of emergency hospital admissions caused by violence has risen 30% in the past four years, with the majority of cases in the poorest areas of the county, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"These shocking figures clearly demonstrate how violent crime is hitting the poorest hardest.

"The surge in violent crime can be directly attributed to the Government's continued focus on what sounds tough, rather than what works."
