Home Secretary has seen sense

2.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 14th Jul 2008

Commenting on Jacqui Smith's u-turn on making people convicted of carrying knives visit the victims of knife crime in hospital, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

"Thank heavens the Home Secretary has seen sense. This idea is not just bonkers, but has been tried, tested and failed in the United States.

"She's on her way to a perfectly executed u-turn, and a couple more days should do it."
