Blair prejudges energy review and backs nuclear
Commenting on remarks made by the Prime Minister during a joint press conference held between Tony Blair and the Australian Prime Minister John Howard, in which he backed nuclear energy as part of Britain’s future energy mix, Chris Huhne MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:
“The Prime Minister’s comments make a nonsense of the energy review, as it is clear that he has prejudged its conclusions. By doing so, he has undermined its credibility as an impartial assessment of the energy options for Britain.
“Nuclear power is a tried, tested and failed energy source with such massive risks and costs that no private investor has been prepared to fund a generating plant since Three Mile Island and Chernobyl without lashings of government subsidy. New nuclear plants would be a costly mistake.”
