FLATULENT LIVESTOCK WORSENING CLIMATE CHANGE – HUHNE

Wednesday 3 January 2007

Commenting on the project launched today at the Oxford Farming Conference which highlights the economic opportunities and environmental threats for farming from climate change, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defra Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

“Farming is in the front line of the battle against climate change because of changing rainfall patterns, rising temperature and extreme weather events. Farming has potential to tackle the causes.

“Farming can reduce dramatically its own greenhouse gas emissions through diet changes for livestock, but it can also grow a major part of the solution through bio-fuels and energy from green waste.

“Flatulent livestock emitting methane are beyond a joke, and are a major and growing source of greenhouse gas emissions here and in the developing world.”
