Traffic Black Spot Needs Urgent Fix -Huhne
Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne met campaigners in Hamble to press the case for urgent safety improvements on Hamble Lane following serious traffic incidents.
Mr Huhne is pictured here with Hamble Cllrs Keith House and Sue Ingram together with Sue Thomas, chair of the Blackthorn Health Centre patient support group, and local resident Gareth Williams.
“Too much traffic drives far too fast through the roundabout going south to Hamble, with the result that cars turning out of Satchell Lane and pedestrians are often at risk” said Mr Huhne.
“After two recent incidents – a death and a serious injury – it is clear that we need to slow the traffic to a maximum of 30 mph instead of 40 mph now. This traffic black spot needs to be fixed urgently.
“An island in the middle of Satchell Lane’s junction with Hamble Lane would help pedestrians, but the key is traffic calming to slow down oncoming vehicles both from the north and from the rail bridge on Satchell Lane.
“An increasing number of pedestrians need access to the health centre, and the elderly cannot be expected to sprint across the road as if it were the Olympics. High speeds are also putting many children who attend Hamble School in unnecessary danger” said Mr Huhne.
Cllr Keith House said: “The county council must now get a grip on traffic speeds on Hamble Lane and Satchell Lane after the two recent tragic accidents. We need slower speeds for safety.”
