Fluoride Case Is Weak And Would Undermine Choice – Huhne

Thursday 11 December 2008

Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne has come out against the mass fluoridation of the water supply in south west Hampshire.

Mr Huhne warns that the benefits and costs of the proposed mass fluoridation are not clear from the scientific evidence, and that therefore the health authority should not go ahead.

Although Mr Huhne says that there can never be certainty with medical procedures, the difference between a personal choice on a risky operation and mass medication is clear.

Mr Huhne said: “Mass fluoridation of water leaves the residents of my constituency and many parts of Southampton with no choice at all, and this concerns me”.

The MP pointed out that the chair of the University of York advisory group, Professor Trevor Sheldon, had noted that his review did not show water fluoridation to be safe, and that it found fluoridation to be linked with high levels of dental fluorosis – mottled teeth – which was not just a cosmetic issue.

Mr Huhne also cited the concerns of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight wildlife trust concerning industrial-grade hexafluorosilicic acid (the chemical commonly used in water fluoridation) being added to the water supply.

Mr Huhne said: “The consultation closes on 17th December, and I very much hope that concerned residents will make their own views clear before the closing deadline”.
