Police Must Own Up To Problems To Win Back Public Faith – Huhne

Tuesday 21 April 2009

Commenting on ACPO President Sir Ken Jones’ remarks on policing demonstrations, and on the new videos of the G20 protests, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

“Sir Ken Jones is right to put the policing problems with the G20 demonstration into perspective, but it is also crucial to ensure that public confidence in the police is maintained.

“That means dealing openly, honestly and quickly with the sort of problems revealed again today in further videos of police behaviour during the demonstrations.

“There is alarming evidence that the Met went into denial as soon as allegations started to fly, exactly as it did with Jean Charles de Menezes. This has only served to undermine their credibility.

“Organisations which have problems need to own up and deal with them if they are to retain public faith.”
