Terror Alerts Should Be Clear Or Should Be Junked – Huhne
Commenting on the reduction of the terrorist threat level from ‘severe’ to ‘substantial’ by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:
“There is no point in a graded early warning alert system if it only responds to events after they happen and if the public does not know the practical difference between the varying alerts.
“The threat assessment was reduced just before the London bombings and has been stuck at ‘severe’ since 2007. This latest change is not expected to lead to any practical change in public security measures.
“The centre should define its alerts by setting out some assessment of the probability of an attack over the coming year. The meaning of the alerts should be clear to the public or they should be junked.”
