Rise In Thefts And Burglary Evidence Of Credit Crunch Crimewave – Huhne

Thursday 16 July 2009

Commenting on today’s crime statistics, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Huhne said:

“These figures show a worrying increase in burglary as the recession bites.

“The credit crunch crimewave can clearly be seen by the whopping rise in pick-pocketing and double digit burglary increases in no fewer than nine areas.

“Perhaps more worryingly, this year’s figures demonstrate the increasing unwillingness of victims to go to the police. Two thirds of all crimes are not being reported. This is surely why the police were able to record a five per cent drop in crime while the British Crime Survey recorded an extra half a million offences.

“It is deeply disappointing that detection rates have fallen. If we are to continue to combat crime in a recession then we need more police on the beat catching more criminals, not politicians posturing on penalties.”
