Local MP backs call for free prescriptions
Chris Huhne, MP for Eastleigh, is backing the ‘Prescription Promises’ campaign calling for the abolition of prescription fees for people who suffer from long-term illnesses.
Mr Huhne points out that people with chronic conditions are often least able to pay prescription fees but these can be very substantial.
The Eastleigh MP said that the Prime Minister hadmade a promise in September 2008 to implement this policy, yet has done nothing since then.
The parliamentary motion backed by Mr Huhne plans that the estimated £250 – £350 million cost could be paid for by savings already identified in the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme.
Chris Huhne MP said: “The current economic climate has made it even more difficult for people with long-term conditions to pay for their medication, and some may even be going without.
“It is absolutely unacceptable that the Government have not acted to end this unfair and discriminatory situation.
“The Prime Minister must act now to keep his promise to make life easier for those suffering daily with long-term illnesses, and to ensure that they are never without vital prescriptions.”
END.
